Scarcity Versus Abundance Mentality; A conscious Choice...

August 11, 2016

Flash back: On a beautiful spring day, I was enjoying the view of the lake behind my house, lack Mackay. I knew I was about to leave this special place once Janna, my youngest, was to graduate. I remember the exact feeling I had back then…it was one of sadness. I paused and questioned this negative feeling, allowing myself to reflect on what was happening to me that very moment. The answer came fast: I realized how much I enjoy being in this place. It makes me feel peaceful and happy. And because I love this place so much, the thought of leaving made me feel I will lose this positive experience.

That was a stressful thought indeed!

The personal: Once I questioned that stressful thought, I realized that these nice happy feelings were not unique to the lake…I had experienced similar ones during my stays in other parts of the world too. It was not true that once I’m gone, I will lose that happy feeling state. Leaving lake Mackay behind could be the opportunity to see more beautiful places that evoke happy feelings. In fact, it is the opportunity to experience more, rather than less.

I chose this new happy thought over that of sadness and loss.

The collective: When I think about our collective human nature, I see similar patterns: we want this job, this vacation, this house, this partner, etc. These are "vehicles" which only create “feeling states”. We need to become aware that we are really after the feeling state, not the vehicle. The secret here is mastering our thoughts… those very thoughts which impact how we feel.

The growth: I came to terms with the fact that I cannot hang on to lake Mackay forever. Circumstances, which at times we have no control over, make us relocate from one place to another. Having said that, I became aware that I can change how I feel by changing the thought.

Let’s do it: I invite you to close your eyes and remember a place you love; notice how the thought makes you feel. Observe your emotions and your body sensations too. How do these emotions show up in your body?

A final note: We can access these feelings anytime we choose to and remember that you did not have to be physically there to experience the feeling. While we may not have the power over the physical (situations & places), we can choose how we want to feel. We need to remind ourselves that emotions whether positive or negative do not rise on their own; they are a result of a thought.

Master your thoughts; master your life!
